What is Artificial Intelligence and can it really take over the world? : An article by Sparsha Saha

“AI is likely to be either the best or worst thing to happen to humanity.” - Stephen Hawking   Imagine this, one day you open up your mobile phone and features like “swipe to type” or “keyboard suggestions” suddenly stop working. Not a big deal eh? Alright, now imagine this, an in-use ventilator suddenly stops working normally and starts taking wrong decisions? Both of these scenarios are somewhat related yet very different.   The former shows the use of Artificial Intelligence to make life easier for us in small ways and the latter shows how machines are used in taking complex, potentially life changing decisions.   Since time immemorial, humans have been using small tools or machines to enable their lives in different ways. Take an example of a bullock cart or a steam engine. We have never been intimidated by machines before right? So what’s so different about the twenty-first century? Why do we see articles all around about AI taking over the world? Well you se

The Rabbit and the Dog : A short story by Vivek Malik

Once there was a farmer. He organized a competition between his dog and his rabbit. He made a hole in his biggest field and hid one carrot and a bine in it. He wanted to see which animal will find it first. The rabbit was very cheerful and he threw himself into looking for carrot, digging here and there. He was very sure that he would find the carrot. But the dog after sniffing around a bit, sat down on the ground and began to complain how difficult it was to find one bone in such a big field. The rabbit dug for hours, and with every new hole, the dog complained how difficult it was even for the rabbit. The rabbit on the other hand, thought that each hole dug was one hole less that needed digging. When there was no place in the whole field left to dig, the rabbit dug a tunnel to right under where the dog had been lying all that time. There he found the carrot and the bone. This is how the dog lost due to his negative thinking. He had already found the right place but if he would have d

Shubho Sharodiya : A short story by Tirtha Chakraborty

“… And the memories bring back, memories bring back you…Here's to the ones that we got Cheers to the wish you were here, but you're not… ” . It’s   6:33pm. The alarm has been ringing for three minutes now. Nans came out of the kitchen, her yellow apron stained red from the raspberries and hands covered in flour. “Coming!!! I’m busy!”, she screamed at the phone with a snarl. Dismissing the alarm, she quickly switched to the YouTube app and hurried to the kitchen to attend to her pies after turning on Birendra Krishna Bhadra ‘s 'Mahisasurmardini' . The dimly lit two-bedroom flat in the Charles street of Boston kept echoing the charm of “ আশ্বিনের শারদপ্রাতে বেজে উঠেছে আলোক মঞ্জীর…. ”   for the next thirty one minutes, while the air kept spreading the smell of raspberry pie to the entire neighbourhood.   The picture is quite the contrary in 2A/3, Ballygunge Park, Ballygunge, Kolkata 700019. No one has a moment to sit back. After the early morning Chandipath,
